宣誓效忠之后(英中对照)

古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
宣 誓 效 忠 之 后
after the us civil war was over, all confederate soldiers were required to take an oath of allegiance to the union before they were allowed to become us citizens again. one day, a number of men were before union general benjamin butler to take the oath. one of them looked at the general, and with a peculiar southern drawl said: "we gave you hell at chickamauga, general !"
the general was furious and warned the soldier that failing to take the oath would result in him being shot. with some reluctance, the rebel obeyed. after taking the oath, he said, "general, i suppose i am a good yankee and citizen of the united states now?"

"i hope so," the general replied in a fatherly tone.
"well, general," the man said, "the rebels did give us hell at chickamauga, didn't they ?"
美国 内 战 结 束 后 ， 南 部 联 盟 士 兵 都 要 宣 誓 效 忠 美 国 ， 才 可 以 再 度 成 为 美 国 公 民 。 有 一天 ， 一 些 士 兵 要 在 北 军 将 领 班 杰 明 ． 巴 特 勒 面 前 宣 誓 ， 其 中 一 人 望 巴 特 勒 ， 以 特 别 的 南 方 腔 调 拉 长 声 音 说 ： 「 将 军 ， 奇 克 莫 加 河 一 役 ， 我 方 把 你 们 打 得 落 花 流 水 。 」
巴特 勒 非 常 愤 怒 ， 警 告 那 士 兵 说 ， 假 如 不 宣 誓 ， 就 会 被 枪 毙 。 那 士 兵 虽 然 听 命 ， 但 有点 勉 强 ， 宣 誓 后 说 ： 「 将 军 ， 我 现 在 应 该 可 以 算 是 个 好 的 北 军 士 兵 和 美 国 公 民 了 吧？ 」
巴 特 勒 以 慈 父 的 口 吻 说 ： 「 希 望 如 此 。 」

那 士 兵 说 ： 「 嗯 ， 将 军 ， 奇 克 莫 加 河 一 役 ， 那 些 叛 军 把 我 们 打 得 落 花 流 水 ， 是 不 是 ？ 」
【 附 注 】 一 八 六 三 年 的 奇 克 莫 加 河 战 役 ， 是 美 国 内 战 中 南 军 最 后 一 次 大 胜 。
