between april and june 1940, the germans overran six western european nations. despite all the pressures to cooperate with the occupiers, a spirit of passive resistance was present from the earliest days.
sometimes, for example, a customer would pointedly get up and leave a cafe as soon as a german entered. in parisian cinemas, the germans had to ban applause because the audience would clap and cheer at inappropriate moments. in dutch cinemas, people walked out so often when german propaganda films began that a law was passed banning such departures. in norway, when the german-controlled premier vidkun quisling tried to get all teachers to join a political union, 12000 out of 14000 resigned rather than do so. the schools were closed, and did not reopen till quisling backed down.

一九四○年四月到六月，德军侵占了西欧六个国家。六国百姓虽然处处被迫要和侵略者合作，但从第一天开始，就表现了消极抵抗的精神。
