at a crossing
while i was spending my summer holidays in shanghai, i had my leg cut by a knife. several days later, i found the wound festering①, and went to see a doctor (surgeon). he operated on it and told me not to walk around for at least three days.
but it was impossible for me not to go out, for i had to go to work. the next day i walked from house to house, from street to street, delivering newspapers and letters. in the evening when the day's work was almost over, i felt very tired, and the wound was giving me a greater pain than in the morning. then i realized that to earn money was not an easy thing.
i had to walk home, for i didn't have enough money for the bus fare. it was late and there were very few people in the streets. when i got to a crossing, i saw no car coming in my direction, so i started limping② across the street without looking at the traffic lights. suddenly a bus was coming towards me at a middle speed. i had no choice but to stand still in the middle of the street, thinking that the driver was sure to shout at me angrily. to my great surprise, the driver, a woman, stopped the bus a few meters away from me and smiled at me. this meant that she would let me go first, i tried to walk as fast as i could. when i reached the other side of the street safely, i turned back to have a look at the kind driver. i didn't know how to express my feelings. the only thing i could do was to smile at her to show my thanks. when the bus went away, there were tears in my eyes.
i will never forget that day, that crossing and that woman driver.
