during the second boer war (1899-1902), the british army suffered a disastrous defeat at the battle of spion kop in 1900. one british soldier had been shot in the face by a piece of shell which had carried away his left eye and the upper jaw with the corresponding part of the cheek, and had left a hideous cavity, at the bottom of which his tongue was exposed. he had been lying for hours on the hill. he was unable to speak and, as soon as he arrived at the hospital, he made signs that he wanted to write.
pencil and paper were given him and it was supposed that he wished to ask for something. but he wrote, “ did we win? ” none of the doctors had the heart to tell him the truth.

医 院 人 员 把 纸 笔 送 上 ， 以 为 他 要 提 出 甚 么 要 求 。 不 料 他 写 的 是 ： 「 我 们 战 胜 了 吗 ？ 」 没 有 一 个 医 生 忍 心 把 真 相 告 诉 他 。
【 解 说 】 十 七 世 纪 末 叶 ， 荷 兰 一 批 基 督 徒 移 居 非 洲 南 端 ， 他 们 叫 boers ， 意 思 是 「 农 夫 」 。 英 国 由 于 在 非 洲 殖 民 ， 和 波 尔 人 爆 发 战 争 ， 最 后 获 胜 ， 成 立 南 非 联 邦 。 have the heart to do something 即 「 忍 心 做 某 事 」 ， 一 般 用 于 否 定 句 或 疑 问 句 ， 例 如 ： i did not have the heart to refuse her request （ 我 不 忍 拒 绝 她 的 要 求 ） 。
