during the siege of leningrad in 1941-44, the russian defenders were reduced to living at a level hardly better than animals. cannibalism became a reality rather than just a possibility. patties made from minced human flesh were on sale at the leningrad haymarket. many bodies brought to the frozen cemeteries for burial were found to have the fleshy parts removed from upper arms, thighs and buttocks. sometimes only the heads were left behind. soviet authorities were absolutely silent about this aspect of the siege.
一九 四 一 至 四 四 年 列 宁 格 勒 围 城 战 期 间 ， 守 城 俄 国 军 民 的 生 活 水 准 低 得 几 乎 和 动 物 无异 。 人 吃 人 不 只 是 可 能 ， 而 且 是 事 实 。 列 宁 格 勒 秣 市 场 上 出 售 的 小 馅 饼 ， 就 是 以 碎人 肉 作 馅 。 不 少 尸 体 送 到 冰 封 的 墓 地 前 ， 双 臂 、 大 腿 、 臀 部 肌 肉 都 已 削 去 ， 有 时 只剩 下 头 颅 。 苏 联 当 局 对 围 城 战 的 这 一 面 只 字 不 提 。

【 解 说 】 列 宁 格 勒 一 九 四 一 年 九 月 至 四 四 年 一 月 遭 德 军 围 攻 ， 死 亡 人 数 将 近百 万 ， 获 苏 共 封 为 「 英 雄 城 市 」 （ hero city ） 。 英 雄 在 共 产 国 家 特 别 多 ， 性 命 也特 别 便 宜 。
上 面 那 段 英 文 有 两 个 字 可 以 谈 谈 ： reduce 和 cannibal 。 reduce 是 「 减 少」 ， 引 伸 其 义 ， 就 是 「 使 沦 落 」 或 「 贬 低 」 ， 例 如 ： the once wealthy family is now reduced to poverty （ 那 个 家 庭 曾 经 很 富 有 ， 但 现 在 已 沦 为 贫 家 ） 。 cannibal 是 「 吃 人 肉 的 人 」 或 「 吃 同 类 果 腹 的 动 物 」 ， 例 如 ： the shipwrecked sailors had to become cannibals to stay alive （ 遇 上 船 难 的 水 手 为 了 活 下 去， 只 有 吃 人 ） 。
