military discipline in the british army of the 18th century was notoriously strict. a certain william taylor, a grenadier, having heard a cry in the woods, went there and found another soldier about to ravish a girl. taylor set her free, while her attacker took to his heels. however, the captain of the guard, hearing a noise, found taylor and hanged him without any more ado. it was too late when, in tears, the girl taylor had rescued told the captain what had happened.
十八世纪期间，英军纪律之严，每为人诟病。有一位近步兵叫威廉．泰勒，听到林中有人叫喊，就走进去，看见另一个士兵正要强奸一名女郎。泰勒放了那女郎，施暴者则逃之夭夭。但是，近军队长寻声而至，看见泰勒，也不管三七二十一，把他绞死。泰勒拯救的女郎哭向队长说明一切，但已经太迟了。

【 解 说 】 heel 是 「 鞋 跟 」 。 逃 跑 时 ， 鞋 底 扬 起 ， 所 以 to take to one's heels 即 「 逃 去 」 ， to show a clean pair of heels 更 是 「 尽 快 逃 去 」 ， 例 如 ： he owed me money, and showed a clean pair of heels whenever he saw me at a distance （ 他 欠 我 钱 ， 每 次 远 远 看 见 我 ， 都 拔 脚 就 跑 ） 。
ado 是 「 麻 烦 」 或 「 费 力 」 ， without more / further ado 有 「 马 上 」 的意 思 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） there was much ado about the queen's visit （ 女 王 到 访， 招 待 工 作 十 分 繁 乱 ） 。 （ 2 ） i started work without further ado （ 我 马 上开 始 工 作 ） 。 ado 这 个 字 是 古 英 语 ， 今 天 已 很 少 用 。 莎 士 比 亚 戏 剧 much ado about nothing （ 无 事 自 扰 ） 也 不 常 见 演 出 。
