the battle of ayacucho in 1824 resulted in peru gaining independence from spain. before the battle, general monet of the royalist forces told the revolutionary leader antonio sucre that some of his soldiers had relatives in the revolutionary army, and would like to meet with them before fighting. sucre agreed. thereupon about 50 men from each side walked to a point between the lines. they were given a half hour to exchange greetings.
"ah, my brother," said a royalist general to his revolutionary brother, "how sorry i am to see you covered with ignominy." his brother was incensed and, turning on his heel, walked away. the general ran after him, embraced him, and they both wept.

after the half hour, general monet walked to the revolutionary lines again and said, "are we ready for battle?" and fighting commenced.
