though the french defeated the russians at borodino in 1812, both sides suffered comparable losses. indeed, napoleon considered borodino the most awful battle of his career. the day after the battle, riding with several aides through the battlefield, napoleon encountered a dying soldier. seeing the man's pain, napoleon called for a stretcher. “ he's our enemy, sire, ” an aide observed. “ after a victory there are no enemies, ” napoleon replied. “ only men. ”
一八一二年博罗迪诺一役，法军虽然打败了俄军，但双方伤亡同样惨重。事实上，拿破仑认为这是他戎马生涯最可怕的一役。战争次日，他和几名武官骑马巡视战场，看见一个垂死士兵痛苦不堪，就叫人抬来担架。有从者说：「陛下，他是我们的敌人。」拿破仑回答：「战胜后，就没有敌，只有人。」

【解说】consider和regard都可解作「视为」，但「consider＋受词（object）之后须用tobe，「regard＋受词」之后则须用as；tobe可以略去，as则不可，例如：i consider him （ to be ） the best man for the task/i regard him as the best man for the task （ 我 认 为 他 最 适 合 做 这 件 事 ） 。
observe 一 字 ， 读 者 当 然 都 知 道 是 「 观 察 」 、 「 看 到 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 ： i observed him come/coming out of the house （ 我 看 见 他 从 房 子 走 出 来 ） 。 但 observed 还 可 解 作 「 说 」 ， 一 般 是 指 根 据 观 察 所 得 而 说 ， 例 如 ： ” it looks like rain, ” he observed （ 他 说 ： 「 看 来 会 下 雨 。 」 ） 我 见 过 有 人 把 这 observed 译 做 「 观 察 」 ， 错 得 厉 害 。
