大象的故事(英中对照)

古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
大象的故事
king pyrrhus of epirus used elephants as a shock tactic against his enemies. but elephants were a rather unreliable weapon because of their tendency to run amok on the battlefield.
during pyrrhus' siege of argos, an elephant called nicon had lost his master, who had been wounded several times and had fallen off. nicon rampaged through the crowd till at length he found the body of his master. he lifted him up from the ground with his trunk, and carrying him upon his two tusks, furiously trod all under foot he found in the way, killing friends and foes alike.
伊庇鲁斯国王皮拉斯对敌会出动大象，以收震慑效果。但大象在战场上有时会发狂，不是十分可靠的武器。

皮拉斯围攻阿尔戈斯时，一只叫尼康的大象失去了主人：牠主人接连几次受创，从象背上摔了下来。尼康在人群中横冲直撞，终于找到主人尸体，用鼻子卷起，搁在两条长牙上，怒气冲冲，把阻碍牠去路的人都踩在脚下，死者有敌人，也有自己人。
【 附 注 】 amok 也 作 amuck 。 两 个 拼 法 都 可 读 作 amuck ， 而 amok 这 拼 法 则 较 为常 见 。 amok 本 是 马 来 语 ， 意 思 是 「 发 了 杀 人 狂 」 ， 英 文 常 用 于 run amok 这 片 语 ，指 发 狂 不 受 控 制 ， 例 如 ： he ran amok when his girlfriend left him （ 他 因 女朋 友 弃 他 而 去 ， 发 狂 了 ） 。
rampage 是 「 狂 暴 地 左 冲 右 撞 」 ， 也 可 作 名 词 ，常 见 于 go on the rampage （ 撒 野 ） 一 语 ， 例 如 ： the football fans went on the rampage. （ 那 些 足 球 迷 大 肆 捣 乱 ） 。
