when mussolini led italy into world warⅡ, among the most prominent slogans of italian fascism were the words"believe! obey! fight!" children at school began every day by chanting the fascist ten commandments, one of which ran,"mussolini is always right." however, despite mussolini's efforts to promote his cult of violent action, italy's cultural traditions endured. the liberal philosopher benedetto croce campaigned against the regime and, though his home was sacked by fascist thugs, mussolini never dared to forbid him to publish.
in july 1943, when news was announced that mussolini was arrested by the king, crowds danced in the streets of rome. the whole edifice of mussolini's regime collapsed in the capital with so little regret that not a single man died trying to stop the overthrow.

墨索里尼率领意大利参加第二次世界大战的时候,意大利法西斯党最响亮的一句口号是:「信任!服从!战斗!」儿童上学,每天首先要诵读法西斯十诫,其一是:「墨索里尼永远正确。」但墨索里尼虽然大力提倡暴力崇拜,意大利的文化传统不绝如缕。自由主义哲学家贝内代托.克罗切致力反对墨索里尼政权,法西斯党虽然遣恶棍到他家里抢掠,墨索里尼却始终不敢禁止他发表文章。
一九四三年七月,墨索里尼遭国王拘捕的消息传出,罗马的群众拥到街上跳舞。整个墨索里尼政权在国都土崩瓦解,没有什么人惋惜,更没有一人为了维护这政权而舍命。
