in hitler's germany, all teachers had to be members of the nazi party. a schoolgirl described how pressure was applied. her mother took up coaching young athletes during the early war years. not long after, there was a knock at the door."enter a stranger. he said he had heard about my mother's achievements. he had assumed that she was a member of the party and only found out that she was not when he checked his records. no doubt that was just an oversight, and would she join?(of course anyone who referred to the party meant the nazi party, there was only one.)
"my mother froze over and said firmly'no'. he wanted to know her reasons, and she said she had reasons of her own. he did not understand. my mother said surely coaching had nothing to do with politics. however, the man thought otherwise, and my mother had to give up a much cherished job."
