though born in scotland, john paul jones took a lieutenant's commission in the continental navy at the outbreak of the american revolution in 1775, and harassed british shipping. in 1779, sailing the ramshackle le bonhomme richard, jones encountered a convoy of british merchantmen under the escort of the royal naval ship serapis. the commander of the serapis, richard pearson, recognised the richard and attacked.
the sides of the richard were so pounded by the serapis's 44 guns that pearson sent a signal inviting jones to surrender. back came the immortal reply, "i have not yet begun to fight."

jones closed on his enemy and lashed the richard's bowsprit to the mizzenmast of the serapis. the two ships mauled each other until an explosion aboard the serapis so disheartened pearson's men that it was they who surrendered.
约翰．保罗．琼斯生于苏格兰，但一七七五年美国独立战争爆发时，却担任北美大陆海军上尉，经常侵扰英国船舶。一七七九年，他驾残旧的博诺姆．理查号，遇到一队英国商船。护送商船的英国军舰塞拉皮斯号船长理查．皮尔逊认得理查号，下令攻击。
理查号船身被塞拉皮斯号的四十四座大炮重创。皮尔逊发出讯号招降。琼斯的回答流传至今：「我还未开始战斗。」
琼斯开船靠近敌舰，把船头斜桅和塞拉皮斯号尾桅绑在一起，两艘战船互相轰击。最后，塞拉皮斯号上一声爆炸，令皮尔逊手下将士丧胆，投降的反而是他们。
