on 5 november 1940, captain edward fegen, commanding officer of the auxiliary cruiser hms jervis bay, was escorting a convoy of 38 ships from canada to england when the convoy was sighted by the german pocket battleship admiral scheer.
the jervis bay was originally a british liner, and was only armed with a few world war i vintage 6-inch guns. the 11-inch guns of the admiral scheer easily outranged her. fegen knew that his ship's guns would not be able to reach the admiral scheer, so he ordered the convoy to scatter and closed with the german ship. a shell hit the jervis bay's bridge, shattering fegen's right arm, but he continued the hopeless fight for three hours, and eventually went down with his ship. jervis bay's sacrifice bought enough time for all but five of the 38 ships to escape.
