sitting bull, chief of the sioux, fought against american incursion into sioux territory in the 1860s. after the famous battle at little pig horn in 1876, in which the us army's seventh cavalry under general custer was completely annihilated, he and his followers headed for canada.
he had hoped to remain in canada, but canadian officials refused to grant him a reserve or provide rations. as a result, sitting bull and his band had to return to the us in 1881 after obtaining from the american army guarantees of safety. as he surrendered to american officials, he told his son that he must now learn to live with the whites, and urged him to remember that his father was the last sioux to give up his gun.

sitting bull remained a powerful force among his people. in 1890, he was murdered by the american government.
