古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
碧 血 千 秋
shortly after the outbreak of the french revolution, king louis xvi was arrested. in december 1792, with his king facing trial by the revolutionary convention, the noted lawyer chretien de malesherbes ended his retirement to offer his services.
louis gratefully accepted. "your sacrifice is the greater," he observed, "for you are jeopardising your own life while you cannot possibly save mine."
sure enough, louis was guillotined in january 1793. malesherbes was arrested in december, along with his daughter, his son-in-law and his grandchildren, and in april 1794 he was guillotined, after having seen all whom he loved executed before his eyes for their relationship to him.

法 国 大 革 命 爆 发 后 不 久 ， 国 王 路 易 十 六 被 捕 。 一 七 九 二 年 十 二 月 ， 着 名 律师 克 雷 蒂 克 ． 德 马 勒 泽 布 眼 看 国 王 面 临 革 命 议 会 审 讯 ， 决 定 复 出 ， 要 为 国 王 效 力 。
路 易 十 六 中 心 感 激 ， 接 受 了 德 马 勒 泽 布 的 协 助 ， 说 ： 「 你 不 可 能 挽 救 我 的 性 命 ， 反 而 连 自 己 的 性 命 都 可 能 赔 上 ， 所 以 更 加 难 得 。 」
路易 十 六 说 得 对 。 他 一 七 九 三 年 一 月 被 押 上 断 头 台 处 死 。 十 二 月 ， 德 马 勒 泽 布 和 女 儿、 女 婿 、 外 孙 一 起 被 捕 ； 次 年 四 月 ， 德 马 勒 泽 布 也 死 在 断 头 台 上 ， 死 前 还 得 看 至 爱 的 人 由 于 受 他 株 连 ， 一 一 在 他 面 前 被 处 死 。
【 附 注 】 jeopardise 是 「 危 害 」 ， 和 endanger 同 义 ， you are jeopardising your own life 改 为 you are endangering your own life 也 可 以 。
