in the early days of the american revolutionary war, though america's founding fathers appreciated france's spiritual support of their cause, they were less pleased about unkept promises of material assistance.
one day in 1776, on his first visit to paris, benjamin franklin attended a dinner party. a frenchman remarked that the revolution offered a wonderful spectacle. "yes," franklin tartly replied, "but the spectators don't pay anything for it."

一七 七 六 年 ， 班 杰 明 ． 富 兰 克 林 第 一 次 访 巴 黎 ， 有 一 天 出 席 晚 宴 。 一 名 法 国 人 说 ， 美国 的 革 命 至 为 壮 观 。 富 兰 克 林 冷 冷 的 回 答 ： 「 不 错 ， 但 观 众 一 毛 不 拔 。 」
【 附 注 】 富 兰 克 林 除 了 是 着 名 科 学 家 ， 还 是 美 国 独 立 宣 言 起 草 人 之 一 。
英文 字 根 （ root ） spec 有 「 看 」 的 意 思 ，
spectacle （ 奇 观 、 壮 观 ） 、
spectator （ 观 者 ） 都 是 例 子 。

， the spectators ran riot after the football match 即 「足 球 比 赛 后 ， 观 众 大 肆 闹 事 」 。
复 数 的 spectacles 一 般 指 「 眼 镜 」 ， 和 glasses 同 义 ， 而 to make a spectacle of yourself 指 「 做 一 些 令 自 己 出 洋 相 的 事 」 。 inspect （ 视 察 ） 、 suspect （ 取 「 从 下 面 看 」 含 义 而 解 作 「 怀 疑 」 ） 、 special （ 取 「 特 别 看 待 」 含 义 而 解 作 「 特 殊 」 ） 、 prospect （ 展 望 ） 等 等 ， 都 有 「 看 」的 意 思 。
