皮 拉 斯 之 死
at his siege of argos in 272 bc, king pyrrhus of epirus flew upon his enemies. it fortuned that one hurt him with a pike, and pyrrhus at once set upon that man, who was an argian born, a man of mean condition, and a poor old woman's son. his mother at that time had got up to the roof of a house, as all other women of the city had, to see the fight. when she saw that it was her son pyrrhus came upon, she took a tile, and with both her hands cast it upon pyrrhus. the tile lighted full in the nape of his neck, and broke his neck bone asunder. pyrrhus was suddenly so benumbed that he lost his sight, and falling from his horse he met his end.

公元 前 二 七 二 年 ， 伊 庇 鲁 斯 国 王 皮 拉 斯 围 攻 阿 尔 戈 斯 城 ， 亲 自 杀 向 敌 人 。 也 是 命 该 如此 ， 他 被 人 用 长 矛 刺 伤 了 ， 就 朝 那 人 扑 去 。 那 人 生 于 阿 尔 戈 斯 ， 出 身 寒 微 ， 是 个 贫困 老 妇 人 的 儿 子 。 当 时 他 母 亲 和 城 中 其 他 女 人 一 样 ， 走 了 到 屋 顶 上 观 战 ， 看 见 皮 拉斯 直 扑 她 儿 子 ， 就 捡 起 一 片 瓦 ， 双 手 举 起 ， 向 皮 拉 斯 掷 去 ， 正 中 皮 拉 斯 颈 背 ， 把 颈骨 打 断 。 皮 拉 斯 突 然 全 身 麻 木 ， 失 去 视 力 ， 从 马 上 掉 下 来 死 了 。
【 附 注 】 皮拉 斯 野 心 勃 勃 ， 征 战 四 方 ， 企 图 仿 效 亚 历 山 大 大 帝 ， 结 果 却 只 是 毁 了 自 己 的 国 家 。他 曾 经 击 败 罗 马 ， 但 手 下 伤 亡 惨 重 ， 英 文 因 以 pyrrhic victory （ 皮 拉 斯 式 胜 利 ）来 说 「 惨 胜 」 。
a man of mean condition 的 condition 指 「 社 会 地 位 」 ，例 如 ： he appeared to be a man of noble / lowly condition （ 他 似 乎 是 贵 族出 身 / 他 似 乎 出 身 寒 微 ） 。
