古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
射 击 练 习
training new recruits in the use of the musket was an indispensable part of soldiering, though rarely can it have been as dangerous as it was for general jean malher of napoleon's army in 1808. putting the recruits through their paces malher ordered them to fire their blanks. unfortunately he got in the way of the volley and was transfixed by a ramrod : eighteen soldiers had failed to remove their ramrods from the barrels before firing.
on another occasion during manoeuvres at leghorn in 1804 a french soldier fired his ramrod, which accidentally killed a civilian spectator. luckily for the soldier the victim turned out to be a brigand wanted by the police.

训 练 新 兵 使 用 毛 瑟 枪 ， 是 从 前军 旅 生 涯 不 可 免 的 工 作 ， 一 般 都 不 怎 么 危 险 ， 一 八 ○ 八 年 拿 破 仑 军 中 将 领 让 ． 马 莱的 遭 遇 却 是 例 外 。 马 莱 当 时 测 试 新 兵 ， 命 令 他 们 发 射 空 弹 。 大 家 开 枪 时 ， 他 不 巧 走到 射 程 之 内 ， 被 一 枝 推 弹 杆 射 中 ： 有 十 八 名 士 兵 开 枪 前 忘 了 拿 出 推 弹 杆 。
又 法 军 一 八 ○ 四 年 曾 在 来 亨 演 习 ， 一 名 士 兵 射 出 推 弹 杆 ， 意 外 夺 去 一 个 旁 观 平 民 的 性 命 。 那 士 兵 算 是 走 运 ： 死 者 原 来 被 警 方 通 缉 ， 是 个 土 匪 。
【附 注 】 pace 是 「 步 子 」 。 要 看 马 匹 状 态 ， 可 试 看 牠 步 行 （ walk ） 、 快 步 （ trot ） 、 慢 跑 （ canter ） 、 疾 驰 （ gallop ） 的 表 现 ， 这 叫 做 put a horse through its paces 。 引 伸 其 义 ， put someone / something through his / its paces 即「 测 试 某 人 / 某 物 的 能 力 」 ， 例 如 ： he put the new bicycle through its paces （ 他 试 验 新 脚 踏 车 的 性 能 ） 。
