one day during the versailles conference following world war i, while french prime minister georges clemenceau was travelling to a meeting, his car was fired upon by a young anarchist named emile cottin.
as the car raced off, cottin fired the last of his seven shots, one of which hit clemenceau near the heart. when cottin was apprehended and the death penalty demanded, however, clemenceau intervened. "we have just won the most terrible war in history, yet here is a frenchman who misses the target six times out of seven," clemenceau said. "of course he must be punished. "his recommendation? eight years in prison, "with intensive training in a shooting gallery".

【附 注 】 anarchism 是 无 政 府 主 义 。 无 政 府 主 义 者 认 为 国 家 、 政 府 都 应 该 废 除 ， 所 有人 依 理 性 、 感 情 建 立 平 等 公 正 的 社 会 。 anarchy 即 「 无 政 府 状 态 」 ， 常 用 来 说 大 混乱 ， 例 如 ： as soon as the teacher was away, the classroom fell into anarchy （ 师 一 离 开 ， 室 就 乱 起 来 ） 。
