the hostilities between the french and the allied troops in belgium leading to the battle of waterloo in 1815 saw many military units on both sides broken up. some soldiers, separated from their units, were unsure of the outcome of the battle. a french lieutenant fleeing from the field of waterloo sought refuge at an inn some forty miles from the battlefield, when his horse gave out on him. the innkeeper said he could share a room with an officer who had arrived earlier and was in bed. the lieutenant was too tired to argue and went upstairs and fell asleep immediately. at dawn he found he was sharing a bed with a british officer who had become detached from his unit and thought the french had won the battle.

一 八 一 五 年 ， 法 军 和 盟 军 战 于 比 利 时 ， 揭 开 了 滑铁 卢 之 役 的 序 幕 ， 双 方 部 队 不 少 打 得 七 零 八 落 ， 有 些 士 兵 离 了 队 ， 也 不 知 道 战 争 胜负 。 一 个 法 国 中 尉 逃 离 滑 铁 卢 战 场 ， 到 了 距 战 场 约 四 十 英 里 的 一 家 客 栈 附 近 ， 马 力不 继 ， 惟 有 去 投 宿 。 客 栈 主 人 说 ， 他 可 以 和 早 些 时 到 来 的 一 名 军 官 同 住 一 个 房 间 ，而 那 军 官 已 经 就 寝 。 中 尉 疲 倦 得 很 ， 也 不 计 较 ， 走 到 楼 上 ， 躺 下 来 就 睡 了 ， 到 黎 明 才 发 觉 和 自 己 同 的 是 个 英 国 军 官 。 那 军 官 和 同 袍 失 散 了 ， 还 以 为 法 军 得 胜 。
【附 注 】 give out 是 动 词 片 语 （ phrasal verb ） ， 指 「 疲 惫 」 或 「 耗 尽 」 ， give out （ on somebody ） 是 说 机 器 等 在 （ 某 人 ） 使 用 时 后 劲 不 继 而 停 下 来 ， 例 如 ： the motorbike gave out （ on him ） before he reached the filling station （ 他 还 未 到 达 加 油 站 ， 摩 托 车 就 燃 油 耗 尽 停 下 来 ） 。
