抽水马桶的副作用(英中对照)

the problems experienced by the rural recruits in britain in 1914 were many. some of them, for instance, found the water closet baffling. a soldier, returning from a lengthy route march, decided to wash his socks in the toilet. having started the task he found he needed more water and so he asked one of his colleagues, who replied, "pull the chain."
the soldier did as he was told, only to see his socks disappear in a swirling rush of water. his explanation, the next day, was accepted by a weary officer, who by that stage had seen and heard just about everything.
一 九 一 四 年 英 国 来 自 乡 间 的 新 兵 遇 上 不 少 问 题 ， 例 如 抽 水 马 桶 就 令 一 些 人 大 为 困 惑 。 一 个 士 兵 长 途 行 军 训 练 回 来 ， 想 在 马 桶 洗 袜 子 ， 动 手 之 后 ， 发 觉 要 多 点 水 ， 向 同 袍 请 。 同 袍 说 ： 「 拉 那 链 子 吧 。 」

那 士 兵 如 言 一 拉 ， 只 见 一 股 水 流 旋 转 而 出 ， 把 袜 子 冲 得 无 影 无 踪 。 第 二 天 ， 他 向 军 官 解 释 。 那 军 官 所 见 所 闻 这 时 已 是 无 奇 不 有 ， 也 懒 得 理 会 了 。
【 附 注 】 留 意 only to see his socks disappear 这 句 式 。 英 文 常 用 「 only to ＋ 原 形 动 词 （ infinitive ） 」 来 说 做 了 一 件 事 之 后 的 不 如 意 结 果 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） the police traced him to his hideout, only to find that he had been killed （ 警 察 追 踪 到 他 藏 身 地 点 ， 却 发 现 他 已 遭 杀 害 ） 。 （ 2 ） i raced to the bus stop, only to see the bus pulling away （ 我 跑 到 巴 士 站 ， 只 见 巴 士 开 走 了 ） 。
