万里长征战(英中对照)

古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
万 里 长 征 战
the fighting in normandy in 1944 between the anglo-american troops and the germans was extremely severe, with both sides suffering heavy casualties. there were american soldiers who came to europe for the second time in a generation to redress the wrongs of the old world.
the assault on st lo caused one american soldier to comment: “ we sure liberated the hell out of the place. ”
and the following inscription was observed on a wall at the fortress of verdun: “ austin white - chicago, ill -1918. austin white - chicago, ill - 1945. this is the last time i want to write my name here. ”

一 九 四 四 年 英 美 联 军 和 德 军 激 战 诺 曼 第 ， 双 方 死 伤 惨 重 。 有 些 美 国 士 兵 三 十 年 内 两 度 到 欧 洲 ， 重 整 这 个 旧 世 界 。
攻 取 圣 洛 之 战 ， 令 一 名 美 军 说 ： 「 我 们 无 疑 把 地 狱 的 魔 鬼 都 在 这 解 放 了 。 」
而凡 尔 登 堡 一 幅 墙 壁 上 则 有 以 下 题 字 ： 「 伊 利 诺 州 芝 加 哥 市 奥 斯 丁 ． 怀 特 一 九 一 八 年到 此 。 伊 利 诺 州 芝 加 哥 市 奥 斯 丁 ． 怀 特 一 九 四 五 年 到 此 ， 我 希 望 这 是 最 后 一 次 在 这墙 上 题 名 。 」
【 附 注 】 圣 洛 、 凡 尔 登 都 是 法 国 城 市 ， 当 时 法 国 仍 被 德 国 占 领 。 old world 一 般 指 欧 洲 ， 和 南 美 、 北 美 这 个 new world （ 新 世 界 ） 相 对 。
generation 即 「 一 代 」 ， 指 人 由 出 生 到 成 家 立 业 的 时 间 ， 约 为 三 十 年 ， 例 如 ： the japs surrendered two generations ago （ 约 六 十 年 前 ， 日 本 投 降 ） 。
