the hundred years' war between england and france started when edward Ⅲ of england laid claim to the french throne. in the spring of 1360, edward Ⅲ , at the head of his army in france, encountered near chartres one of the most dreadful storms recorded in history. the violence of the wind, the size of the hailstones, the incessant glare of the lightning and the sight of hundreds slain around him, greatly worried the king. in a fit of remorse, he sprang from the saddle and stretching his arm towards the cathedral of chartres, vowed to god that he would no longer object to proposals of peace, provided that they were compatible with his honour.

英王 爱 德 华 三 世 声 言 有 权 继 承 法 国 王 位 ， 引 起 英 法 百 年 战 争 。 一 三 六 ○ 年 春 天 ， 爱 德华 三 世 率 领 军 队 ， 在 法 国 沙 特 尔 市 附 近 遇 上 有 史 以 来 少 见 的 可 怕 风 暴 ， 风 势 之 猛 ，冰 雹 之 大 ， 闪 电 之 频 繁 耀 目 ， 以 及 周 围 数 以 百 计 的 战 死 者 ， 令 爱 德 华 三 世 不 能 自 安， 忽 然 大 感 懊 悔 ， 从 鞍 上 跳 下 来 ， 朝 沙 特 尔 大 堂 伸 出 手 ， 向 上 帝 发 誓 ， 说 不 会 再 反 对 和 平 建 议 ， 只 要 建 议 无 损 他 的 自 尊 就 行 了 。
【附 注 】 爱 德 华 三 世 是 英 王 爱 德 华 二 世 和 法 国 公 主 伊 莎 贝 尔 的 儿 子 。 伊 莎 贝 尔 遭 丈 夫冷 落 ， 和 奸 夫 莫 蒂 默 合 谋 把 他 杀 害 ， 莫 蒂 默 即 假 爱 德 华 三 世 之 名 掌 政 。 一 三 三 ○ 年， 爱 德 华 三 世 把 母 亲 囚 禁 修 女 院 ， 并 把 莫 蒂 默 处 死 ， 从 此 亲 政 ， 并 因 母 亲 的 关 系 ，自 称 有 权 继 承 法 国 王 位 。 to lay claim to something 就 是 「 声 言 某 事 物 应 归 其 所有 」 。
