巨 无 霸
in napoleon's grand army was a brigadier-general macard, a man of colossal size and extraordinary bravery. when he was about to charge at the head of his troops, he would invariably cry, "look here! i'm going to dress like a beast." therewith he would take off his coat, his vest, his shirt, and keep on nothing except his plumed hat, his leather breeches and his boots, offering to view a chest almost as shaggy as a bear's. then he would dash forward recklessly, sabre in hand, and swearing like a pagan, on the enemy's cavalry. but he very seldom got at them, for at the sight of this giant, hairy all over and uttering the most fearful yells, his opponents would bolt on all sides, scarcely knowing if they had a man to deal with or some strange animal.

拿 破 仑 大 军 之 中 有 一 个 马 卡 尔 准 将 ， 体 格 魁 梧 ， 勇 猛 非 常 ， 每 次 将 率 军 冲 锋 陷 阵 ， 都 会 高 叫 ： 「 看 ， 我 会 穿 得 像 野 兽 一 样 。 」 说 罢 就 脱 下 外 衣 、 背 心 、 衬 衫 ， 只 穿 羽 毛 军 帽 、 皮 革 马 裤 、 长 靴 ， 浓 密 胸 毛 几 乎 和 人 熊 相 似 ， 手 执 军 刀 ， 奋 不 顾 身 直 向 敌 人 骑 兵 冲 去 ， 同 时 泼 口 大 骂 。 不 过 ， 他 难 得 和 敌 人 接 战 ： 敌 人 看 见 这 个 巨 无 霸 一 身 是 毛 ， 叫 声 恐 怖 ， 都 纷 纷 辟 易 ， 不 知 道 要 对 付 的 是 人 还 是 什 么 奇 怪 野 兽 。
【 附 注 】 shaggy 指 「 毛 粗 而 多 」 ， 而 且 往 往 蓬 乱 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） his shaggy hair was turning grey （ 他 浓 密 蓬 乱 的 头 发 渐 渐 变 白 ） 。 （ 2 ） i once had a shaggy dog （ 我 养 过 一 只 浑 身 蓬 松 长 毛 的 狗 ） 。 pagan 是 「 异 徒 」 ； 对 西 方 人 来 说 ， 基 督 以 外 都 是 「 异 」 。
