at christmas 1914, an unofficial truce came into operation at many points on the western front, and german soldiers started exchanging cigarettes, schnapps and chocolate with their enemy. at frelinghien, a scottish soldier appeared with a football which seemed to come from nowhere and a few minutes later a real football match got under way. the germans hooted and whistled when a gust of wind revealed that the scots wore no drawers under their kilts. after about an hour's play, the german commander heard about it, and sent an order putting a stop to the match, which finished with a score of three goals to two in favour of fritz against tommy.

一 九 一 四 年 圣 诞 节 ， 西 部 战 线 多 处 实 行 非 正 式 休 战 ， 德 军 和 敌 人 交 换 香 烟 、 烈 酒 、 巧 克 力 等 。 在 弗 雷 林 延 ， 一 名 苏 格 兰 士 兵 不 知 从 哪 拿 了 个 足 球 到 来 ， 几 分 钟 之 后 ， 一 场 真 正 的 足 球 比 赛 展 开 了 。 忽 然 大 风 起 处 ， 揭 露 那 些 苏 格 兰 兵 短 裙 之 下 原 来 没 有 穿 内 裤 ； 德 军 见 了 ， 就 嘘 起 来 ， 大 吹 口 哨 。 双 方 玩 了 一 小 时 左 右 ， 德 军 司 令 听 到 消 息 ， 下 令 停 止 球 赛 。 球 赛 结 果 是 德 军 三 比 二 击 败 英 军 。
【 附 注 】 这 是 第 一 次 世 界 大 战 初 期 的 故 事 ， fritz 指 德 国 人 ， 是 德 人 常 用 名 字 friedrich 的 简 写 ； tommy 指 「 英 国 士 兵 」 ， 因 为 十 九 世 纪 英 军 各 种 表 格 样 本 的 签 名 栏 上 一 律 写 thomas atkins 。 under way 即 「 在 进 行 」 那 way 字 或 变 成 weigh ， 但 这 变 体 现 在 已 没 有 人 用 。 under way 有 时 会 合 为 一 字 ， 例 如 ： the meeting was underway （ 会 议 正 在 举 行 ） 。
