杰作(英中对照)

古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

one day during world war Ⅱ , picasso was visited by the german gestapo in his apartment in nazi-occupied paris. one of his visitors, noticing on the table his depiction of the destruction of guernica by german planes, asked, "did you do that?" "no," picasso replied. "you did."
picasso was once asked which of his many paintings was his favourite. "the next one," he said.
第二次世界大战期间，巴黎被纳粹德国占领。有一天，德国的盖世太保来到毕加索居住的公寓套房，其中一人看到台上放了一幅画，画题是德国战机蹂躝的格尔尼卡。他问：「这是你的杰作？」毕加索回答说：「不是。是你们的杰作。」
有人曾经问毕加索，他画了那么多画，自己最喜欢哪一幅。毕加索说：「下一幅。」

【解说】格尔尼卡是西班牙一个城市，西班牙内战期间（1936-1939），德国协助右翼的反政府军，曾猛烈轰炸该市。盖世太保则是纳粹德国的秘密警察。
depict是「描画」。你可以说the artist / the painting depicts the horrors of war （ 画 家 ? 那 幅 画 描 画 了 战 争 的 恐 怖 ） 。 留 意 绘 画 、 文 学 作 品 等 ， 即 使 是 几 百 年 前 创 作 ， 其 主 题 一 般 也 会 用 现 在 式 动 词 来 说 ， 例 如 ： jesus looks sad in the last supper （ 《 最 后 晚 餐 》 的 耶 稣 看 来 很 忧 郁 ） 。 用 文 字 描 写 ， 也 可 称 为 depict ， 例 如 ： the novel depicts human nature in depth （ 这 本 小 说 描 写 人 性 入 木 三 分 ） 。
