when julius caesar landed on the shores of britain with his roman legions in 55bc, he took a bold and decisive step to ensure the success of his military venture. ordering his men to march to the edge of the cliffs of dover, he told them to look down at the water below.
to their amazement, they saw every ship in which they had crossed the channel engulfed in flames. caesar had deliberately cut off any possibility of retreat. they were obliged to advance and conquer, which was exactly what they did.

【 解 说 】 凯 撒 率 军 渡 海 之 后 ， 罗 马 渐 次 占 据 不 列 颠 ， 到 公 元 五 世 纪 初 才 撤 退 。 凯 撒 烧 船 ， 和 秦 末 项 羽 破 釜 沉 舟 ， 都 是 孙 子 「 投 之 亡 地 然 后 存 ， 陷 之 死 地 然 后 生 」 的 兵 法 。
legion 是 古 罗 马 的 军 团 ， 每 团 有 三 千 至 六 千 名 士 兵 。 现 在 ， 这 个 字 常 用 来 说 「 众 多 」 ， 作 名 词 、 形 容 词 都 可 以 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） legions of tourists flock to the seaside resort every summer （ 每 年 夏 天 ， 都 有 一 大 批 一 大 批 游 客 来 到 这 海 滨 胜 地 ） 。 （ 2 ） though he is definitely not a good writer, his readers are legion （ 他 写 的 东 西 绝
