the battle of waterloo in 1815 was a battle of numerous tragedies. sergeant weir of the scots greys was pay sergeant, and as such might have excused himself from serving in action. but he disdained to avail himself of his privilege, and requested to be allowed to take part in the mortal fray. in one of the charges, he fell mortally wounded.
later, when the field was searched for the wounded and slain, the body of sergeant weir was found with his name written on his forehead with his own hand, dipped in his own blood. this he was supposed to have done, that his body might be recognised, and that it might not be imagined that he disappeared with the money of his troop.

一 八 一 五 年 滑 铁 卢 一 战 有 万 千 悲 惨 故 事 。 苏 格 兰 灰 骑 兵 团 的 韦 尔 中 士 是 军 饷士 官 ， 大 可 不 必 参 战 ， 但 他 不 屑 享 此 特 权 ， 请 缨 杀 敌 ， 冲 锋 时 遭 到 致 命 重 创 ， 倒 在地 上 。
后 来 ， 军 方 在 战 场 上 搜 寻 伤 者 死 者 ， 找 到 了 韦 尔 中 士 的 尸 体 ， 发 觉 他 死 前 用手 蘸 自 己 的 血 ， 在 自 己 额 头 上 写 下 姓 名 。 他 这 样 做 ， 应 是 希 望 尸 体 可 以 辨 认 ， 并 可免 人 家 猜 疑 他 怀 同 袍 军 饷 逃 之 夭 夭 。
【 解 说 】 苏 格 兰 灰 骑 兵 团 是 着 名 陆 军 团 ， 一 六 七 八 年 成 立 ， 所 跨 战 马 都 是 灰 色， 故 名 。 mortal fray 的 fray 是 「 争 吵 」 或 「 冲 突 」 ， 例 如 ： as they got into a heated argument, i kept silent, not wanting to join the fray （ 他 们 激烈 争 论 起 来 。 我 一 言 不 发 ， 不 想 卷 入 这 场 争 执 ） 。 mortal fray 直 译 就 是 「 拚 死 的冲 突 」 。
