during the period known to historians as the dark ages, the arab raids on the christian lands of the mediterranean were very destructive. it was the amusement of the arabs to profane, as well as to pillage, the monasteries and churches. at the siege of salerno, a mussulman chief spread his couch on the communion table, and on that altar sacrificed each night the virginity of a christian nun. one night, as he wrestled with a reluctant maid, a beam in the roof fell down on his head, and the death of the lustful emir was imputed to the wrath of god, which was at length awakened to the defence of his faithful spouse.

【 解 说 】 西 洋 史 称 公 元 五 ○ ○ 至 一 一 ○ ○ 年 左 右 为 「 黑 暗 时 代 」 。 现 在 ， the dark ages 常 用 来 说 不 开 明 的 时 代 ， 例 如 ： china has not yet emerged from the dark ages of tyranny （ 中 国 还 未 脱 离 苛 政 的 黑 暗 时 代 ） 。

at length 是 成 语 ， 指 「 终 于 」 ， 例 如 ： after many matrimonial quarrels, he at length got divorced （ 他 和 妻 子 多 次 争 吵 ， 终 于 离 婚 ） 。 留 意 on that altar sacrificed the virginity 以 及 at length awakened to the defence of his faithful spouse 二 语 ， 都 有 冷 酷 的 戏 谑 意 味 。
