germany's crushing defeat of france in 1940 was a shattering blow to french morale. many blamed the government for complacency and for not equipping french troops with modern weapons of war. paul reynaud, who was briefly prime minister before the german occupation and was imprisoned by the germans until 1945, recounted the following : “ i received a postcard found on the body of an officer of general corap's army, who had just committed suicide in le mans station. he wrote, ‘ i am killing myself mr president to let you know that all my men were brave, but i cannot send them to fight tanks with rifles. ’ ”

一九 四 ○ 年 法 军 被 德 军 大 败 ， 士 气 重 创 ， 不 少 人 批 评 政 府 未 能 居 安 思 危 ， 也 没 有 现 代武 器 供 应 法 军 。 法 国 遭 德 国 占 领 之 前 ， 保 罗 ． 雷 诺 曾 短 暂 出 任 总 理 ， 后 来 被 德 军 囚禁 至 一 九 四 五 年 。 他 谈 到 一 段 故 事 ： 「 我 收 到 一 张 明 信 片 ， 是 科 拉 普 将 军 麾 下 一 名军 官 尸 体 上 找 到 的 ， 他 刚 刚 在 勒 芒 车 站 自 杀 。 明 信 片 上 写 道 ： 『 总 统 先 生 ： 仆 今 自裁 ， 盼 先 生 明 白 仆 之 部 下 ， 率 皆 骁 勇 ， 然 仆 终 不 能 驱 之 上 沙 场 ， 以 来 福 枪 抗 坦 克 车也 。 』 」
【 解 说 】 complacency 也 作 complacence ， 指 「 自 满 」 ， 有 「 不 思 进 取 」 的贬 义 ， 和 self-satisfaction 差 不 多 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） a complacent company is likely to be outdone by its competitors （ 公 司 不 思 进 取 ， 很 容 易 被 同 行 对 手超 越 ） 。 （ 2 ） though sars appears to have been controlled, there is no room for complacency on the part of the medical profession （ 非 典 型 肺 炎似 乎 已 受 控 制 ， 但 医 学 界 还 是 不 能 自 满 ， 掉 以 轻 心 ） 。
