古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

a cuban revolt against the spanish colonial government was practically over in february 1898 when the american battleship maine, riding at anchor in havana harbour, suddenly exploded. the destruction of the ship outraged american public opinion, which without waiting for evidence held the spanish responsible, and newspaper publisher william randolph hearst sent to cuba the artist frederic remington, who specialised in the depiction of warfare.
the expected conflict between the united states and spain did not immediately materialise, however, and remington cabled hearst : should he return home? hearst promptly cabled back : "please remain. you furnish the pictures, and i'll furnish the war."

大 众 预 期 的 美 国 与 西 班 牙 之 战 没 有 立 即 爆 发 。 雷 明 顿 打 电 报 给 赫 斯 特 ： 他 要 不 要 返 回 美 国 ？ 赫 斯 特 马 上 回 电 报 说 ： 「 请 留 下 来 。 你 负 责 画 画 ， 我 负 责 挑 起 战 争 。 」
【 解 说 】 缅 因 号 爆 炸 的 原 因 ， 至 今 未 明 ， 但 当 时 美 国 的 低 级 报 刊 不 惜 弄 虚 作 假 煽 动 民 情 ， 终 于 挑 起 战 争 。 这 类 专 事 耸 人 听 闻 的 报 刊 ， 英 文 叫 yellow press ， 而 这 种 办 报 手 段 则 叫 yellow journalism ， 和 现 代 中 文 所 谓 「 黄 色 报 刊 」 意 思 截 然 不 同 。
