甘乃迪论胜败(英中对照)

in 1961, the american government encouraged refugee cubans to invade cuba. when the cubans landed in the bay of pigs, they were killed or captured to a man.
president kennedy, who had found the matter already in progress when he assumed office, accepted the blame manfully. but when he saw all those responsible trying to implicate others in the misjudgement while clearing themselves, he could not withhold a comment : "it has often been said that victory has a thousand fathers, but defeat is an orphan."
一 九 六 一 年 ， 美 国 政 府 鼓 励 古 巴 流 亡 者 进 攻 古 巴 。 他 们 在 猪 湾 登 陆 ， 不 是 被 杀 ， 就 是 被 俘 ， 无 一 得 免 。

甘 乃 迪 总 统 就 职 时 ， 进 攻 古 巴 计 划 已 经 展 开 。 他 勇 敢 的 承 担 了 过 失 。 但 是 ， 看见 那 些 主 事 官 员 无 不 设 法 自 我 开 脱 ， 而 把 判 断 错 误 的 责 任 诿 于 他 人 ， 甘 乃 迪 还 是 忍不 住 说 ： 「 常 言 道 ， 千 百 人 会 自 认 是 胜 利 的 生 父 ， 失 败 则 总 是 无 母 无 父 。 」
【 解 说 】 to a man 是 「 所 有 人 」 、 「 没 有 例 外 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 ： we agreed to a man not to vote for the liberals, convinced that they would not hesitate to betray the cause of democracy （ 我 们 一 致 决 议 不 投 票 给 自 由党 员 ， 深 信 他 们 会 毫 不 犹 豫 出 卖 民 主 运 动 ） 。 假 如 要 说 「 几 乎 没 有 例 外 」 ， 可 说 almost to a man 。
有 时 ， 你 会 见 到 to the last man 这 说 法 ， 即 「 到 最 后 一 人 」 ， 例 如 ： the soldiers were killed to the last man （ 将 士 全 军 覆 没 ） 。
