古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
武 士 之 道
the knights of old were supposed to have courage, honour and a readiness to help the weak and protect women, but in actual fact they could be as callous as they were cowardly. in 1379, when a fleet of english knights under sir john arundel was on its way to brittany, france, it was overtaken by a storm. seeing that the jettisoning of other things failed to relieve the vessels, the knights threw into the sea sixty women, many of whom had been forced to embark.
古代武士据说须勇而好义，帮助弱者，保护女性，但事实上他们可能既冷酷又怯懦。一三七九年，有英格兰舰队满载武士，由约翰．阿伦德尔爵士率领，出发赴法国不塔尼，途中遇上风暴。那些武士为了减轻战船负荷，把很多东西抛进海，但见情况仍然危险，就把六十个女人也投入怒涛。这些女人不少本是胁迫上船的。

【 解 说 】 jettison 是 指 船 或 飞 机 遇 险 时 把 货 物 抛 弃 ， 以 减 轻 负 荷 ， 常 引 伸 解作 「 放 弃 累 赘 的 东 西 」 ， 例 如 ： he jettisoned the companion of his hard times once his fortunes took a turn for the better （ 他 运 气 一 见 好 转 ， 就把 从 前 共 患 难 的 伴 侣 抛 弃 ） 。
有 时 ， 船 太 轻 也 有 倾 覆 危 险 ， 须 用 重 物 压 舱 。 ballast 即 「 压 舱 物 」 ， 也 可以 作 动 词 ， 例 如 ： tons of sand were used as ballast for the ship / the ship was ballasted with tons of sand （ 那 艘 船 用 了 很 多 吨 的 沙 压 舱 ） 。
