【解说】appal指极大的震惊，美式英语作appall，一如enrol（登记）的美式写法是enroll。appal常和介系词at连用，例 如 ： （ 1 ） he was appalled at the conditions in which our students studied （ 他 看 见 我 们 的 学 生 在 那 样的 环 境 读 书 ， 大 为 震 惊 ） 。 （ 2 ） the sight of the mutilated torso is appalling （ 那 个 残 缺 不 全 的 人 体 躯 干 ， 触 目 惊 心 ） 。
slim 是 「 苗 条 」 ， 指 瘦 得 美 丽 。 假 如 要 说 瘦 得 难 看 ， 可 用 skinny 、 bony 二字 ， 都 是 「 皮 包 骨 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 ： his bony body spoke of malnutrition （ 他骨 瘦 如 柴 的 身 体 ， 显 示 营 养 不 良 ）
