"call no man happy till he is dead," solon replied. he was right. when cyrus the great of persia invaded lydia, croesus was taken captive. as he was escorted to his execution, he called out to solon three times and cyrus, on hearing the explanation of this, was moved to spare his life.
里底亚最后一任国王克里萨斯豪富泼天，曾问雅典大贤梭伦：「还有人比我幸福吗？」梭伦回答说：「人不到盖棺那天，都不可以说幸福。」他说得对。后来波斯的居鲁士大帝入侵里底亚，克里萨斯沦为阶下囚，被押去处死的时候，连喊梭伦三次。居鲁士问明原委，动了慈悲心，免他一死。

【解说】克里萨斯就如我国东周时代的富商陶朱公和白圭，成为「富裕」的代名词。英文成语(as) rich as croesus 等 于 「 富 埒 陶 白 」 ， 例 如 ： though as rich as croesus, li ka-shing is still determined to exact every single cent he can from the public （ 李 嘉 诚 富 埒 陶 白 ， 对 公 众 的 每 一 分 钱 还 是 予 取 予 求 ） 。
