starting on 17 january 1943, american and british troops tried to break through the german gustav line in italy by taking monte cassino. three times they were hurled back.
then the polish 2nd corps* took their place. after three days of fierce fighting, on 18 may, the poles raised the polish flag on the top of the ruins of the benedictine monastery that crowned monte cassino. it was a costly victory: 1000 polish soldiers were killed and 3000 were wounded. a polish cemetery was erected. the dedication
says,"you, stranger passing by, tell poland that, for our freedom and yours, we have given our souls to god, our bodies to the soil of italy, and our hearts to poland."
一九四三年一月十七日开始,美、英军队尝试攻取卡辛诺山,以突破德国在意大利的古斯塔夫防线,但进攻三次都被击退。
波兰第二军接手进攻,经过三天激战,到了五月十八日,终于在卡辛诺山巅本笃修道院的败瓦颓垣上,竖起波兰旗。胜利的代价十分惨重,波兰士兵阵亡的有一千人,负伤的有三千人。当地修筑了一个波兰坟场,有题词说:「路过的陌生人,请向波兰传语:为了大家的自由,我们把灵魂付与上帝,肉体付与意大利黄土,赤心付与波兰。」

*波兰一九三九年遭德国、苏联瓜分。一九四一年,德军席卷波兰,进侵苏联,当年遭苏联俘虏的波兰士兵才获释放。他们间关万里,前往欧洲,和盟军并肩作战。
