总统到访
as the american civil war was drawing to an end, president lincoln looked beyond the bitterness of war to reconciliation.
in april 1865, richmond, the confederate capital, was taken by union troops. confederate general george pickett's wife was then in richmond. one day, there was a rap on her door. with her baby in her arms, she opened it. the caller was lincoln.
"the president!" she gasped.
"no; abraham lincoln, george's old friend."
the baby reached out his hands to lincoln. lincoln took him in his arms, and an expression of love lit up his sad face. the baby insisted on giving his father's friend a kiss.

"tell your father, the rascal, that i forgive him for the sake of your bright eyes," said lincoln as he returned the baby to his mother.
美国南北战争将近结束时，林肯总统着眼的不是战争仇恨，而是和解。
一八六五年四月，南部联盟首都利其蒙被北军攻下。南军将领乔治．皮克特的妻子当时在利其蒙。有一天，她听到敲门声，抱着婴孩，走去开门。来访的是林肯。
她失声说：「是总统！」
「不是总统，是乔治的老朋友亚伯拉罕．林肯。」
婴孩向林肯伸出双手。林肯把他抱过去，忧郁的脸上露出怜爱的光辉。婴孩很执意的亲吻了父亲这个朋友。
林肯把婴孩还给他母亲，并说：「告诉你那个混蛋父亲，为了你这双明亮眼睛，我会宽恕他。」
