the nazi invasion of poland in 1939 ushered in a time of martyrdom for the polish people, who never surrendered. the polish resistance came to represent a serious threat to the occupying forces. when one captured officer was released to deliver an offer of limited collaboration to the resistance command, the command told him to"solve the matter honourably". after a few days, he shot himself.
the polish boy scouts and girl scouts also rose to the occasion. using their scouting skills, they acted as couriers for resistance agents. and during the warsaw uprising in 1944, they would crawl for miles through the sewers of the city to deliver messages, while the germans tried to block the passages with nets or flood them with water. this heroic but unsuccessful uprising cost the lives of 200,000 freedom fighters.
