恻隐之心
in 1759, a french squadron of five frigates invaded ireland. in 1760, they attacked the town of carrickfergus. when the combatants were opposed to each other in the streets, and every inch of ground was disputed by the british, a little child suddenly ran out of a house, and playfully stood between the conflicting parties.
seeing the imminent danger of the child, a french soldier grounded his piece, left the ranks, took the child in his arms, and ran to the nearest door with him, which happened to be his father's. he placed the child in safety, and then returned with all possible haste to resume his part in the fight. he was soon afterwards seriously wounded, and was seen to take a picture from his bosom and died kissing it.

一七五九年，法国一队五艘快速军舰侵犯爱尔兰。一七六○年，他们进攻卡里克弗格斯市，双方在街上战斗，英军寸土必争。一个小孩子忽然从一幢房子里走出来，一副贪玩样子，站在交战的军队之间。
法国一名士兵眼看那孩子处境危急，放下枪，从战斗队伍中走出去，抱起孩子，跑到附近一幢房子门前，而那正是孩子父亲的房子。他把孩子放在安全的地方，马上转身，回到战斗岗位。不久，他受了重伤，有人看见他死时从怀中取出一幅图像亲吻。
【附注】 dispute一般是指「争执」，但也可指「抵抗」或「争夺」，例如： they tenaciously disputed the enemy's advance（他们奋力抗拒敌军前进）。
