annie oakley was an american exhibition shooter. her signature shooting tricks included shooting dimes tossed in the air from 90 feet away, splitting a playing card in two edgewise with a shot from 30 paces away, and shooting the ashes from a cigarette her husband held in his mouth.
in a celebrated event while touring in berlin in 1889, she was challenged by the young kaiser wilhelm to shoot a cigarette held in his own lips. hesitating only a moment, annie had wilhelm hold the cigarette in his hand and not his mouth, took aim, and fired. the bullet flew to its target and knocked the ashes off the cigarette.
later, during world war i, annie wrote to the kaiser asking for a second shot. the kaiser, who started the war, never replied.
