during world war ii, the germans sought to relieve the labour shortage at home by forcible conscription of foreign workers. in occupied france, nationwide conscription began in april 1942.
in paris, patriots sabotaged the forced-labour programme. a train bound for germany was scheduled to leave the gare de i'est in october 1942 with 400 workers. only 27 men turned up at the station. nonetheless, speeches were made and a brass band played to give them a send-off.
as the engine slowly pulled away from the platform, the crowd burst into loud laughter. the carriages were not moving. someone had uncoupled them. the locomotive bravely puffed off alone.
第二次世界大战期间,德国人为补国内劳工短缺,强行征召外国工人。一九四二年四月,在德军占领的法国,全国各地开始征召劳工。
巴黎的爱国人士暗中破坏这个强征劳工计划。一九四二年十月,一列火车原定运送四百名工人由巴黎东站往德国,如期来到车站的却只有二十七人。不过,当场还是有演讲,并有铜管乐队奏乐给他们送行。
火车头慢慢开出站台的时候,群众哈哈大笑起来。火车车厢没有跟着开出。有人解开了火车头和车厢之间的挂钩。那火车头独自在噗哧噗哧声中奋勇前进。
【附注】从前法国工人习惯穿的木鞋,英文叫 sabot。法国工人曾经抗拒工业科技,用木鞋破坏机器,所以 sabotage就是「蓄意并多是悄悄的破坏」。
