"quaker" is a popular name for a member of a christian sect named the society of friends and founded by george fox in mid-17th century england. fox rebelled against the state control of the church of england, and argued that consecrated buildings and ordained ministers were irrelevant to the individual seeking god. his followers refused to attend anglican services or pay tithes. this resulted in fox being arrested. according to fox's journal, justice bennet"was the first that called us quakers, because i bade them tremble at the word of the lord".
fox was imprisoned on several occasions. during the reign of charles ii, 13,562 quakers were arrested and imprisoned, and 198 transported as slaves. but the society of friends continued to grow.
