古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

russian aggression against turkey in 1853 led to the crimean war between russia and an alliance of britain, france and turkey. during one of the battles, there was some confusion about the orders, and 673 british cavalrymen were sent on a charge up a long valley with russian artillery firing on them from three sides. they suffered heavy casualties and, though able to engage the russian forces at the end of the valley, they were soon forced to retire. more than 200 of them were killed.
militarily, the charge was a terrible blunder, but the reputation of the british cavalry was greatly enhanced, thanks in no small part to tennyson's famous poem "the charge of the light brigade": "into the valley of death / rode the six hundred.../ theirs not to reason why; / theirs but to do and die."

一 八 五 三 年 俄 国 犯 土 耳 其 ， 引 起 克 里 米 亚 半 岛 战 争 ， 英 、 法 、 土 耳 其 联 盟 抗 俄 。 在 一 场 战 役 中 ， 由 于 军 令 传 达 不 清 ， 六 百 七 十 三 名 英 国 骑 兵 奉 命 沿 一 长 谷 进 攻 ， 遭 俄 军 炮 兵 三 面 轰 击 ， 死 伤 枕 藉 ， 虽 然 终 于 到 达 山 谷 彼 端 和 俄 军 交 战 ， 但 不 久 就 被 迫 退 却 ， 死 者 超 过 二 百 人 。
军 事 上 ， 这 场 进 攻 是 个 严 重 错 误 ， 但 英 国 骑 兵 的 声 誉 却 大 大 提 高 了 。
这 得 归 功 于 丁 尼 生 的 着 名 诗 篇 《 轻 骑 兵 旅 冲 锋 行 》 ： 「 六 百 男 子 汉 ， 策 马 死 亡 谷 … … 捐 躯 分 内 事 ， 且 莫 问 因 由 。 」
【 附 注 】 丁 尼 生 （ 1809-1892 ） 是 英 国 桂 冠 诗 人 （ poet laureate ） ， 即 由 国 王 任 命 的 官 方 诗 人 。 据 说 他 在 报 上 读 到 上 述 轻 骑 兵 旅 故 事 ， 心 情 激 动 ， 花 了 几 分 钟 就 写 成 《 轻 骑 兵 旅 冲 锋 行 》 。
