英 国 保守 党 一 九 四 五 年 挟 第 二 次 世 界 大 战 胜 利 余 威 ， 参 与 全 国 大 选 ， 出 乎 意 料 落 败 。 其 后不 久 ， 英 王 乔 治 六 世 说 要 给 温 斯 顿 · 邱 吉 尔 一 个 象 征 式 荣 誉 。 邱 吉 尔 辞 谢 不 受 。

他 说 ： 「 国 民 已 经 给 了 我 一 个 滚 蛋 勋 章 ， 我 为 什 么 还 要 拜 领 国 王 的 嘉 德 勋 章 ？ 」
【附 注 】 嘉 德 勋 位 是 英 国 最 高 的 勋 位 ， 受 勋 者 衣 饰 包 括 天 鹅 绒 袜 带 。 「 袜 带 」 英 文 叫 garter ， the order of the garter 的 名 称 即 由 此 而 来 ， 邱 吉 尔 也 因 此 联 想 到 the boot （ 靴 子 ） 。 英 文 俚 语 to give somebody the boot （ 给 某 人 靴 子 ） 是 「踢 开 某 人 」 、 「 开 除 某 人 」 的 意 思 ， 也 作 to boot somebody out ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） he was given the boot / he got the boot after three warnings for breaking workplace rules （ 他 因 违 反 工 作 场 所 规 则 受 到 三 次 警 告 之 后 ， 被 开 除了 ） 。 （ 2 ） he was booted out of the company for taking bribes （ 他 因 受贿 ， 被 公 司 炒 鱿 鱼 ） 。
thereafter 是 「 其 后 」 。 这 个 字 不 常 用 ， 可 用 afterwards 取 代 ， 例 如 可 说 shortly afterwards, king george Ⅵ offered churchill a token honour 。 token 是 「 象 征 」 ， 除 了 作 形 容 词 ， 也 可 作 名 词 ，例 如 ： this gift is a token of my appreciation （ 这 件 礼 物 ， 代 表 我 感 铭 之 情） 。
