josephine baker, an african american considered to be one of the most sensual performers of all times, became a french citizen in 1937. when france fell to the germans in 1940, she became active in the underground resistance movement. "parisians have given me everything, especially their hearts. now i will give them mine," she said.
she let members of the resistance hide in her remote chateau. she smuggled to the free french in neutral lisbon secret messages written in invisible ink on her music. and she played the part of a ditsy dancer at diplomats' parties, then wrote down everything she heard. "my notes would have been compromsing if discovered, but who would dare search josephine baker to the skin?" she said later.

after the war, baker was awarded the medal of resistance by general charles de gaulle.

战 后 ， 蓓 克 获 戴 高 乐 将 军 颁 赠 抗 德 运 动 奖 牌 。
