古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。

still on the rise but not yet the primary enemy of britain, general napoleon bonaparte intended to threaten the british position in india via the conquest of egypt. in august 1798, a british fleet of 14 ships under horatio nelson, which had for several weeks been scouring the western mediterranean sea looking for the french fleet, came upon the 15 french ships at alexandria.
as preparations were made for a battle on the nile, nelson had dinner with his officers. "before this time tomorrow," he remarked, "i shall have gained a peerage, or westminster abbey."
nelson won the battle – and a peerage.

拿破 仑 将 军 干 青 云 而 直 上 期 间 ， 还 未 成 为 英 国 大 敌 ， 但 已 准 备 先 征 服 埃 及 ， 伺 机 取 代英 国 在 印 度 的 地 位 。 贺 瑞 修 ． 纳 尔 逊 率 领 英 国 一 支 十 四 艘 战 船 舰 队 ， 经 过 几 个 星 期在 西 地 中 海 搜 寻 ， 终 于 在 亚 历 山 大 港 找 到 了 十 五 艘 战 船 的 法 国 舰 队 。
双 方 准 备 在 尼 罗 河 开 战 。 战 前 纳 尔 逊 和 手 下 军 官 共 晋 晚 餐 ， 说 ： 「 明 天 这 个 时 候 ， 我 不 是 已 经 获 得 封 爵 ， 就 是 已 经 名 登 西 敏 寺 。 」
结 果 他 打 胜 了 仗 ， 也 赢 得 爵 位 。
【附 注 】 西 敏 寺 是 英 王 加 冕 的 地 方 ， 也 是 历 代 王 族 、 名 臣 、 名 将 、 文 豪 等 葬 身 的 地 方， 所 以 to have gained westminster abbey 等 于 荣 誉 而 死 ， 颇 似 古 代 中 国 名 臣 「功 成 画 麟 阁 」 。
scour 即 「 搜 遍 （ 某 个 地 方 ） 」 ， 例 如 ： they scoured the countryside looking for the missing girl （ 他 们 遍 搜 乡 间 ， 找 寻 那 失 踪 女 孩 ） 。
