in 336 bc, alexander the great succeeded his father as king of macedonia and went on to execute his father's plans for freeing the greeks of asia minor from persian rule. he invaded the persian empire with 30,000 infantry and 5,000 cavalry, defeating the persian king darius Ⅲ at the battle of issus.
darius wrote to alexander, asking him to take ten thousand talents for the ransom of all those prisoners he had in his hands, and for all the countries and signories on the east side of the river euphrates, and one of his daughters also in marriage, so that he might be his kinsman.
alexander imparted this to his council. among them parmenio said, "if i were alexander, i would accept this offer."

"so would i indeed," said alexander, "if i were parmenio."
公 元 前 三 三 六 年 ， 亚 历 山 大 大 帝 继 承 父 亲 的 马 其 顿 王 位 ， 并 按 父 亲 计 划 ， 手 解 放 小 亚 细 亚 波 斯 治 下 的 希 腊 人 。 他 率 领 步 兵 三 万 人 、 骑 兵 五 千 人 ， 进 侵 波 斯 帝 国 ， 在 伊 萨 斯 战 役 之 中 ， 打 败 了 波 斯 王 大 流 士 三 世 。
大流 士 写 信 给 亚 历 山 大 ， 请 以 一 万 塔 兰 特 ， 赎 回 亚 历 山 大 手 上 所 有 俘 虏 ， 以 及 幼 发 拉底 河 东 岸 所 有 国 家 、 封 地 。 又 请 以 一 个 女 儿 嫁 给 亚 历 山 大 ， 结 为 姻 亲 。
亚 历 山 大 把 大 流 士 的 提 议 告 诉 议 会 。 议 员 帕 马 尼 奥 说 ： 「 我 是 亚 历 山 大 ， 就 会 答 应 。 」
亚 历 山 大 说 ： 「 我 是 帕 马 尼 奥 ， 也 一 定 会 答 应 。 」
【 附 注 】 塔 兰 特 是 古 希 腊 货 币 单 位 。 大 流 士 不 敌 亚 历 山 大 ， 终 于 身 死 国 亡 。
