古德明《征服英语》之英语军事故事，古德明，香港英语教育作家，他开了一个《征服英语专栏》，在专栏中专门用英语写了世界近代史上的军事小故事，用英语讲述历史中那些惊心动魄的战争。
一 只 耳 朵 触 发 十 年 战 争
the war of jenkins's ear arose out of britain's illicit trade in spanish america. in 1738, a british sea captain robert jenkins appeared before parliament to exhibit an ear pickled in brine. he alleged that it was his ear, cut off by the spanish coast guard while they were carrying out a search of his ship in the caribbean. the british government, determined to continue its drive towards commercial and military domination of the atlantic basin, used this incident as an excuse to declare war on spain.
the war came to an end in 1748 without any gain of territory on either side.
詹 金 斯 耳 朵 之 战 的 起 因 ， 是 英 国 在 西 班 牙 美 洲 殖 民 地 非 法 贸 易 。 一 七 三 八 年 ， 英 国 一 名 远 洋 船 船 长 罗 勃 特 ． 詹 金 斯 上 国 会 ， 展 示 一 只 浸 在 盐 水 的 耳 朵 ， 声 言 耳 朵 是 他 的 。 他 说 船 行 到 加 勒 比 海 ， 西 班 牙 海 岸 巡 逻 队 登 船 搜 查 ， 把他 的 耳 朵 割 下 来 。 英 国 政 府 本 来 就 锐 意 继 续 在 大 西 洋 建 立 商 业 和 军 事 霸 权 ， 于 是 用这 事 件 作 藉 口 ， 向 西 班 牙 宣 战 。

这 场 战 争 一 七 四 八 年 结 束 ， 交 战 双 方 都 没 有 侵 占 得 对 方 领 土 。
【附 注 】 illicit 和 illegal 都 可 解 作 「 非 法 」 ， 两 字 有 时 通 用 。 不 过 ， illicit 还有 「 不 触 犯 法 律 却 违 反 一 般 道 德 或 规 矩 」 含 义 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） the president's wife was blatantly engaged in illicit / illegal dealings in shares （ 总统 的 老 婆 肆 无 忌 惮 从 事 非 法 股 票 交 易 ） 。 （ 2 ） his wife had an illicit affair with the postman （ 他 太 太 和 邮 差 有 奸 情 ） 。
