the glorious revolution of 1688 led to the overthrow of james ii of england and the establishment of his daughter mary ii and her husband william iii on the throne. lord halifax was among the first to take up arms on behalf of mary and william. however, he was revolted by the many who swarmed to demand rewards for their roles in the revolution.
reminded of the capitoline geese whose cackling alerted the roman garrison to a night attack by the gauls in 390 bc, halifax drily declared:"rome was saved by geese, but i do not remember that the geese were made consuls."

【 附 注 】 英 国 国 王 詹姆 斯 二 世 实 行 专 制 统 治 ， 终 于 被 臣 民 推 翻 。 玛 丽 二 世 和 丈 夫 威 廉 三 世 继 位 ， 接 纳 了《 权 利 法 案 》 （ bill of rights ） 。 法 案 规 定 君 主 必 须 守 法 ， 政 令 也 必 须 国 会 同意 ， 确 立 了 君 主 立 宪 制 度 。
留 意 revolt 除 了 指 「 造 反 」 ， 还 可 解 作 「 使 反 感 」 或 「 使 恶 心 」 ， 例 如 ： he was revolted by the smell
