in 1812, in the path of napoleon's advancing army, the russians abandoned the city of smolensk and torched it. napoleon, watching with several aides, compared the inferno to an eruption of vesuvius, and asked rhetorically whether it was indeed a fine sight.
"horrible, sire," an aide replied.
napoleon disagreed. "remember, gentlemen," he declared, "as a roman emperor once remarked, 'the corpse of an enemy always smells sweet!' "
一 八 一 二 年， 拿 破 仑 军 队 进 犯 斯 摩 棱 斯 克 ， 俄 国 人 焚 城 而 退 。 拿 破 仑 和 几 个 副 官 一 起 观 火 ， 说眼 前 火 海 好 比 维 苏 威 火 山 爆 发 ， 并 以 赞 叹 口 气 问 这 景 象 是 不 是 很 好 看 。

一 个 副 官 回 答 ： 「 陛 下 ， 这 景 象 很 可 怕 。 」
拿 破 仑 不 以 为 然 ， 说 ： 「 各 位 ， 请 记 ， 正 如 一 位 罗 马 皇 帝 所 说 ， 『 敌 人 的 尸 体 总 是 香 的 』 。 」
【附 注 】 俄 国 以 焦 土 政 策 对 付 拿 破 仑 ， 法 国 大 军 深 入 俄 境 ， 得 不 到 补 给 ， 最 后 溃 退 ，死 者 无 数 ， 拿 破 仑 帝 国 从 此 衰 落 。 斯 摩 棱 斯 克 那 片 火 海 其 实 显 示 了 法 军 惨 败 的 命 运， 只 是 拿 破 仑 看 不 见 ， 他 的 副 官 却 似 乎 看 见 了 。 维 苏 威 火 山 位 在 义 大 利 南 部 ， 公 元七 十 九 年 那 次 爆 发 ， 岩 浆 埋 没 了 庞 贝 （ pompeii ） 、 赫 库 兰 尼 姆 （ herculaneum ）两 座 古 城 。
inferno 是 「 地 狱 」 ， 形 容 词 是 infernal ， 两 字 常 用 于 比 喻 ， 例如 ： （ 1 ） chernobyl became an inferno after the nuclear plant disaster in 1986 （ 切 尔 诺 贝 利 经 一 九 八 六 年 核 电 厂 一 劫 ， 变 成 人 间 地 狱 ） 。 （ 2 ） political prisoners in mainland china are often subjected to infernal torture （ * 的 政 治 犯 常 遭 受 惨 毒 酷 刑 ） 。
